The World Academic Congress Universities for Poverty Alleviation (UPA), organized by the NGO Helsinki España with the support of Santander Universities of Banco Santander, gathers on 6 and 7 July universities from Europe, America, Asia, and Africa.
Madrid, July, 2nd 2015.- The role that University plays in alleviating poverty in the world will be the central theme that the Rectors of 63 universities will work together at the headquarters of Banco Santander in Boadilla del Monte (Madrid) on 6 and 7 July.
Under the slogan UNIVERSITIES FOR POVERTY ALLEVIATION (UPA) the NGO Helsinki España launches a global academic mobilization that aims to bring together universities worldwide to work for the inclusion of Human Rights, and the real work for poverty alleviation in the academic curriculum.
During these two days, various leaders of educational thought, will discuss, share, reflect and devise an action plan so that in and from the university confronts one of the most important social challenges of our world: poverty.
Through three themes – networking, social innovation and social inclusion – the leaders of academic institutions as prestigious as Yale University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Buenos Aires, the Universidad Complutense de Madrid and the Institute Tecnologico de Monterrey, among others, will take the first step for UPA to become the benchmark for international university networking in the field of poverty alleviation and human rights.
Greater recognition of the University as an actor and forming of future leaders to work for poverty alleviation from any professional sector, facilitate synergies with companies and governments or the transversal approach to human dimension including it in the academic curriculum, are some of the objectives of the International Congress of Rectors UNIVERSITIES FOR POVERTY ALLEVIATION (UPA). In the year that the Sustainable Development Goals are adopted, this fact is even all the more prominent, given the importance of the university in society and as an actor in the work for the end of poverty.
